breaking news out of las vegas where a vehicle crashed into a crowd of people on the strip. it happened outside the paris hotel and casino. 37 people rushed to the hospital. seven remain in critical condition, one person was killed. the driver was taken into custody and is being checked for alcohol and other substances. a large part of the strip will remain closed during the investigation. stay for abc 7 news for breaking updates and follow us on twitter at abc 7 news bay area. i'm eric thomas.

one person in custody after allegedly making threats against muslims and having a homemade explosive device. police evacuated neighbors homes and the bomb squad detonated the device three hours ago. no one was hurt. dark clouds hung over the bay area before the rain moved in today. this video shows the overcast sky and the rain pelting wind shields. and in santa rosa, this video of light rain falling coming down steadily all day. and our emeryville camera, the rain is not too heavy, but it is wet out there. this is the most persistent light rain we have seen in some time. busy tracking the showers moving through the bay area tonight. we'll show you where the stediest rain is falling. it's moving in a direction into

cities that haven't seen rain for much of the day. it's finally moist enough in the south bay. outside here at abc 7, a damp night along the embarcadero. san francisco picked up an inch of rain in the past 24 hours. this is the most we've seen in about a year in a single day. santa rosa, napa, oakland, all over 1/2 inch. steady showers tonight. tomorrow morning a brief break. next storm event tomorrow afternoon. that looks to pack a bigger punch. the full forecast coming up. >> thank you very much. up in the fresh snow is creating traffic problems. chains required on highway 50 and interstate 80. one tow truck driver has seen a couple of rollovers and says people are driving too fast. once you get past the slick roads, people are having a great time. >> feels great. we love it. we were just here yesterday. >> feels like christmas. that's what christmas is all

celebrated its annual christmas service today despite a crash that destroyed part of its building. abc 7 news was in vallejo for the event. each year the congregation collects toys and gives them to children in the community. last night two people were hurt when a car slammed into the church. the driver was speeding. the crash destroyed two rooms, which is used to teach those children. >> this is our spiritual house. people were real worried. obviously, everybody came together and still came to church and they're here celebrating with all of us. >> church leaders are thankful those involved survived the crash. cleanup was scheduled around today's service. >> thousands of underserved children in the south bay are going to have new toys for the holidays. abc 7 news was in san jose as volunteers of sacred heart sorted through a mountain of donations from the donation station. 18,000 toys will be begin out to

of a popular summer camp and after school children in the north bay. owners of mcdonald ranch tell abc 7 news since our story aired two weeks ago, they were able to place nearly all their animals into new homes. linda and richard mcdonald opened the 50-acre sanctuary 23 years ago after losing one of their jobs they can't afford to keep the nonprofit sanctuary going. they received $8,000 in donations. on tuesday they are meeting with someone who offered to help them work on a new business plan. california-based spacex is delaying the launch of falcon 9 rocket. tonight was supposed to be the first launch since an accident grounded the rocket in june. the redesign rocket is securing seven satellites and will launch from cape canaveral in florida. elon musk tweeted tomorrow night has a 10% higher chance of a good landing, punting 24 hours. coming up next -- all aboard the holiday train at this

one of san jose's great holiday traditions is back on display. christmas in the park is drawing in holiday revelers all over the bay area. it's been a tradition over 30 years. essential magazine called christmas in the park one of the top ten displays of holiday marge magic in the world. each year volunteers put in

260,000 hours putting in the display. it looks like our football team could have used more practice themselves. we'll get to that in a moment. we'll get to the weather right now. this has been a persistent storm. >> it little storm that could. keeps raining lightly. these numbers are adding up with more rain on the way for monday. an active picture tracking that steady light rain. the steadiest is beginning to move into the south bay. light showers working their way through san jose. light rain in palo alto. light showers in fremont. light rain in san francisco. light rain in oakland. this is the theme, persistent light rain at least through the midnight hour tonight. temperatures under the cloud cover really have not budged all that much. we've generally been sitting in the mid 40s to low 50s for much of the evening. that's where they'll sit the next couple of hours. as you go hour by hour, early

tomorrow morning 2:00, we are starting to see the tail end of this light rain beginning to move through. i think we'll see a temporary lull in the activity 9:00 on your monday morning. most areas will see wet roads. there won't be much rainfall. monday afternoon 4:00, we'll track downpours. something we are seeing, this next storm may favor the south bay. even lingering into tuesday as well. by tuesday 9:00 in the morning tracking light showers. this is a longer storm that's going to settle over the bay area tomorrow. our storm will be a moderate storm with downpours developing in the afternoon and evening. this looks to be a good soaking storm between 1/2 inch and inch of total rainfall. some of our wettest spots could see over an inch of rain. future tracker rainfall shows you by tuesday morning, oakland, hayward, livermore. san francisco 3/4 inch.

coming up at 11:00, a surfing legend says he built the perfect man made wave. a boy scouts' troop scary encount were a bear in the woods. tonight on abc 7 news at 11:00. there is very little surprise as to who won the box office this weekend. the final figure did eclipse most estimates. "star wars" the force awakens stormed into theaters late thursday. the studio kept reviews under wraps until the last minute to help hide surprises. those reviews are now at 95% fresh on rotten tomatoes and made $238 million, the largest opening weekend ever. it made $515 worldwide, nearly 1/5 of the way of "titanic's"
